Sharing our Stories of New Year

Children in Room 7 have been sharing their stories about how New Year is celebrated across the cultures represented in our community.  Students created research questions about their family celebration of New Year and brought these home to investigate with their families.
We have a number of groups:  Filipino, Indian, Pasifika, Maori and Pakeha New Zealand.  The children were delighted to learn of the commonalities they shared- roti with curry enjoyed both in Fiji and India.  Fireworks in New Year celebrations in Gisborne, New York and the Philipines!  Jomin and Abel shared their recent family holidays in India where they experiences palaces, ornate water fountains, girls dressed in saris and boys wearing crowns!
The childrens lived experiences of travelling back to their birthplaces, the sights, sounds ans sumptuous smells of delicious food brought their stories to life and the class took turns to draw images of the scenes which had been described.
Sharing the sights, smells and tastes of these delicacies is an upcoming delight!
